A message from Shannon Velletri,

I've always been a very private person and I’ve always taken pride in working hard for myself and what I needed. These past few months have challenged the fundamental beliefs I grew up with. I grew up believing that I alone was responsible for me and never to ask for help. Now with 2 kids to take care of I can’t let my pride get in the way of asking for help. In the beginning of this year the abusive marriage I saw no way out of took a sharp turn where I found myself at rock bottom with my kids close behind. My older son was injured by my husband and my 6-month old was beginning to get caught up in all the abuse as well. I spent years making excuses for a man I was afraid of but once my children were in his crosshairs I knew I had to leave. Now almost 3 months after a restraining order and arrest was made I find myself no longer fearing for me or my kids safety but have discovered a new fear for our security. I am in the middle of a divorce and find a new form of abuse being dealt out. Financial abuse. Refusal to ensure basic needs of housing, heat, electricity as well as leaving me to drown in a sea of unpaid bills with his own child in danger of suffering the most. Through tons of help from local and state programs I have been able to keep myself and my kids under a roof with food in our bellies. Now I find all of my options narrowing down with court dates that seem to never end and spin in circles. I am able to sustain what I have going forward but the hole my soon to be ex-husband has left me in has me spinning my wheels and getting nowhere. I am at my last options and feel very much like a beggar, I feel ashamed, I feel unworthy of all the help I’ve received. For the sake of my kids I need to keep asking for more and am so grateful to anyone and everyone who is willing and able to help. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your help and for giving the priceless lessons of generosity, kindness and faith in humanity to my children. The fact that I can lean on so many people in such an uncertain and scary time brings so much peace and joy into our lives. I hope the same is returned to you by your generosity.
