I am raising money to buy a Smart drive for my daughter Lauren, this smart drive will power her wheelchair and give her some independence.
Lauren is 17 years old and has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, scoliosis and chronic regional pain syndrome, this causes her chronic fatigue, partial and full dislocations and her shoulders, hips, knees and ankles are particularly affected by this condition.
My daughter is a wonderful, kind, caring, funny and intelligent young lady who loves to learn, enjoys school, has lots of friends, she loves to go to concerts and music events and of course loves make up and shopping like most girls her age.
The problem is that Lauren cannot walk very far at all without being in excruciating pain and suffering from severe fatigue, a few years ago I had to take Lauren out of school and home educate her as she could only manage to go to school every 2 or 3 days at most and her mental health as well as her physical being was suffering, she coped well with home education and we had time to work on her physio but Lauren wanted to go back to school after a year, so we knew now was the time to get her a wheelchair so that school was a possibility. We chose a new fully accessible school and although we have had a lot of support from the school, Lauren was still struggling with pain and fatigue, she doesn't have the strength or stamina to self propel her wheelchair, she has to rely on someone pushing her all of time which means that she can't do anything alone, she can't even get to the toilet alone, she can't go out for some fresh air and have a 'walk' by herself. Lauren is nearly an adult now, she wants to do things for herself, she doesn't want to have restrictions on her because she is a wheelchair user, she has dreams and aspirations of going to university and a career in the media industry, to be able to achieve this, she needs to keep her pain and fatigue levels to a minimum which is why it is crucial we get her a smart drive to help give her that future.
We chose a smart drive as it seems to be the best fit for a Lauren, it's not too heavy for her to lift, she can attach it by herself, it will fit in her car and it has a tracker and can be used with minimal use of her arms which should help with the pain. It has a good range and can be used on any terrain or incline, it should last 7-10 years so is a good investment.
As a single mum and carer, I do not have the money to cover the cost of the smart drive and the accessories needed, we have already had to purchase Lauren a lightweight, comfortable wheelchair which we used Lauren's PIP money to buy at a cost of £2000 as what the NHS provided her with was very uncomfortable, the sitting position she was in was causing a lot of back pain and numbness in the legs, so we had no choice but to save and buy the chair which took quite some time but saving up to pay £5000 for the smart drive is going to take years and we need to get this as soon as possible.
I have attached a link if you would like to find out more about the smart drive and what it can do, the price etc. I have set the fundraiser cost to cover the smart drive, the tracker, axle clamp, bag and also the site fees on here.
Myself and Lauren would really appreciate any help you can give.
