In the years since the Water Protector movement coalesced around Standing Rock in 2016, the oil industry has reacted by getting crony legislators to criminalize free speech and constitutionally protected protest activity, specifically targeting those who protest pipelines. These American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) written and peddled bills have been enacted in five states already and at least seven other states are considering similar legislation.
Louisiana, where 15 people have been arrested while protesting the Bayou Bridge pipeline, has one of the worst anti-water protector laws currently on the books, which impose potential felony convictions that could carry between 5 - 20 years in prison.
L’eau Est La Vie, the Louisiana water is life movement, is leading the charge against these unconstitutional anti-free speech bills. A coalition of folks who were targeted and charged with this corrupt law are now suing the state of Louisiana and challenging the law's constitutionality!
The majority of those protectors who were arrested in Louisiana were illegally detained by private security hired by Energy Transfer Partners/ the Bayou Bridge pipeline, while legally protecting private lands (with permission) and public waterways.
Please help us to support our water protectors who are challenging these illegitimate laws! A win in Louisiana would set a precedent that could bring an end to the backlash of anti-water protector legislation that is spreading from state to state.
