It is that time of year again and I am raising funds for Leko Africa. Leko is the Luo word for 'to dream' and is the organization founded by my late wife, the singer Sali Oyugi in Nairobi, Kenya. Here is a link to her performing
After she passed Joseph Mwanzia and Robinson Owino stepped up and kept her vision alive. I have sent them cash each week to cover office rental, defray travel expenses to performances, purchase and repair instruments and costumes, and provide food and drink during their rehearsals. As the holidays approach I am hoping to raise additional money beyond my house painter pay to repair drums, purchase new instruments and support the children and their families through the holiday season. I still have some sales stock from Sali. Anyone who contributes or supports our effort by spreading the word about this drive will have their name thrown into a hat from which I shall draw a winner. I shall send that person a Kenyan wooden bowl held up by interlinked carved legs.
Leko has continued to grow with Joseph and Robinson engaged with keeping the children in school and focused. They have performed at a various venues for the UN, the USAWA festival and Nairobi National Park. Here is a video of their most recent performance.
All contributions and help are greatly appreciated as Leko Africa remains an important part of my life because Sali lives on through it. I am blessed to be a part of her dream and to have met the children when I attended her memorial service in Kenya last August where the children performed.
