Legal Fund for Dominicans Stripped of Citizenship

In September 2013, the Dominican Constitutional Tribunal issued Sentence 168-13, which retroactively stripped a quarter million Dominicans of Haitian descent of their citizenship. Overnight, the DR claimed that the children and grandchildren of immigrants going as far back as 1929 were no longer entitled to citizenship despite being born in the DR. This law was meant to remove any social or political power that Black people would dare have in the DR.
In Cultured Company is hosting a fundraiser throughout the month of June to fundraise for Bilateral Services’ Statelessness Legal Defense Fund. Founded by the husband of Sonia Pierre and other Dominico-Haitian lawyers with decades of experience, Bilateral Services, provides legal assistance to Dominicans of Haitian descent as well as to Haitian immigrants and their families. Our goal is to raise $20,000 to help 60 Dominico-Haitians fight an unjust legal system to regain their Dominican citizenship and their basic civil rights.
On June 24th at 6pm, In Cultured Company will also be hosting a free virtual screening and panel discussion of Michèle Stephenson’s new documentary STATELESS which traces the complex history and present-day politics between Haiti and the Dominican Republic and reveals the personal impact of institutionalized racism and oppression on the island. Immediately following the screening, we will be joined by the filmmaker and activists working on the ground for a conversation on the ongoing struggle in the years since la sentencia. When we launched our signature workshop, "Decolonizing Hispaniola" - an intimate gathering for people of Haitian and Dominican descent to deconstruct the fraught divisions that define the island and discuss how to move past the current narrative to reshape our future - a single question always lingered in the air. The same question filled our inboxes and was posed under comments on our social media page as people were confronted with the reality of hundreds of thousands of Dominico-Haitians left stateless, invisible, abused: Now that we know what’s going on in DR, what can we do?
