What is La Vieille Maison?

Located on the shores of Baie Sainte Marie in Nova Scotia, this museum of post-exile settler life was once Meteghan's flagship attraction. Built in 1958 by the Bostonian ballet master and quirky philanthropist Adolphe Robicheau from the oldest remaining structures in Clare. The main part of the house is estimated to have been built in the 1790s. It was originally in Comeauville and moved to Meteghan by truck to create the museum. The museum opened in 1959 and served as a repository for the community's antiquities.

The museum was identified as the most well-preserved post-exile Acadian structure by the American Association of Geographers in 1979. In addition, it was designated as a Heritage Property by the Municipality of Clare in 1993.

Today, we risk losing this culturally significant building. A group of Adolphe Robicheau's family members in the USA have been working with citizens of Clare for over two years to find a way to intervene to save this unique cultural asset. In February of 2022, after issuing an RFP, our Municipal Council awarded the property to new philanthropic ownership allowing for its conservation. To this effect, a non-profit society was formed in May of 2022, La Societe Vieille Maison. This society comprises the original steering committee and community members. It has as its mandate to become the museological stewards of the property.

However, the building needs emergency maintenance to achieve this. Before any attempt to return the museum to its former glory, our beloved house needs repairs necessary to prevent further decay. These include a new roof, some foundation repair (small section), sill replacement (small area), replacing broken windows and securing exterior doors, and incidental repairs necessary to prevent further decay. Money raised from this campaign will serve to fund these repairs.

La Societe Vieille Maison wishes to open the museum to the public to coincide with the 2024 World Acadian Congres. Once the building is secured and shell-tight, the Association will be better positioned to negotiate government funding for proper historical conservation. The most substantial way to ensure future grants and government support is to show that it is important to the Acadian community near and far. Qu'est-ce que La Vieille Maison?

Situé a Baie Sainte Marie en Nouvelle-Écosse, ce musée de la vie des pionniers post-exil était autrefois l'attraction emblématique de Meteghan. Il a été construit en 1958 par le maître de ballet bostonien et philanthrope excentrique Adolphe Robicheau à partir des plus anciennes structures connues dans la région de Clare. On estime que la partie principale de la maison a été construite dans les années 1790. Elle se trouvait à l'origine à Comeauville et a été déplacée à Meteghan par camion pour créer le musée. Le musée a ouvert en 1959 et a servi de dépôt pour les antiquités de la communauté.

Le musée a été identifié comme étant la structure acadienne post-exil la mieux préservée par l'American Association of Geographers en 1979. En plus, il a été désigné comme une Propriété Patrimoniale par la municipalité de Clare en 1993.

Aujourd'hui, nous risquons de perdre ce bâtiment d'une grande importance culturelle. Un groupe de membres de la famille d'Adolphe Robicheau aux États-Unis travaille avec des citoyens de Clare depuis plus de deux ans afin de trouver un moyen d'intervenir pour sauver ce bien culturel unique. En février 2022, après avoir lancé un appel d'offres, notre conseil municipal a attribué la propriété à un nouveau propriétaire philanthropique permettant sa conservation. À cet effet, une société à but non lucratif a été créée en mai 2022, la Société Vieille Maison Association. Cette société est composée du comité consultatif original, et de membres de la communauté. Elle a pour mandat de devenir les intendants muséologiques de la bâtisse.

Cependant, le bâtiment a besoin d'un travail de réparation urgent pour y parvenir. Avant toute tentative de rendre au musée sa splendeur d'antan, notre bien-aimée maison a besoin de réparations nécessaires pour éviter que son état ne se détériore davantage. Il s'agit notamment d'une nouvelle toiture, d'une réparation des fondations (petite section), du remplacement des seuils (petite endroit), du remplacement des fenêtres cassées et de la sécurisation des portes extérieures, ainsi que des réparations nécessaires pour éviter la détérioration. L'argent de cette campagne servira à financer ces réparations.

La Société Vieille Maison souhaite que le musée soit ouvert au public pour coïncider avec le Congrès mondial acadien de 2024. Une fois le bâtiment sécurisé et étanche, la société sera mieux placée pour négocier des subventions gouvernementales pour une conservation historique adéquate. La façon la plus substantielle de s'assurer de futures subventions et d'un soutien gouvernemental est de montrer qu'elle est importante pour la communauté acadienne proche et plus en loin. Une façon de faire cela est de contribuer à cette campagne.
