LA COVID Volunteers

Donation protected
LA COVID Volunteers is an initiative started by UCLA medical students who were pulled from the front lines of patient care due to the coronavirus pandemic. We are passionate about supporting our colleagues and friends who remain in the hospitals and clinics, fighting for the lives of our patients, ensuring the safety of our community.
LACV currently has more than 600 student volunteers who are engaged in activities across Los Angeles. We support nearly 60 healthcare families with free in-person childcare, virtual tutoring, pet sitting, and errand running, we have assembled more than 11,000 medical grade face shields, collected thousands of N95s and innumerable other items of PPE from members of the community. Our Food Corps program is providing weekly hot meal deliveries to hospital staff at Harbor UCLA, is creating food boxes to give to hospital employees, and is supporting local food soup kitchens. Additionally, our community outreach program is sewing cloth face masks for large donations and for delivery to at-risk members of the community.

Read more about our teams below:

PPE: In addition to soliciting community donations of PPE and providing it to facilities in need, we are making face shields for hospitals. At this time we’ve made over 11,000 face shields for the UCLA health system. We hope to expand operations to other facilities facing increased need for these shields- but we need your help to buy supplies to make these shields. Donations will also be used to procure needed PPE for our many facilities, including community testing sites, community hospitals, and county health facilities.

Food Corps: Public donations will be funneled into two programs the ensure our front-line providers and hospital staff remain well nourished in the coming weeks.
-First, we will be purchasing meals for janitorial staff and ED and ICU physicians at our community safety-net hospital, Harbor UCLA. We are providing at least 200 hot meals a week to help these workers stay healthy. Meals are purchased from local LA restaurants in an effort to funnel money back into our community and keep people employed!
-Second, we are purchasing household items, food, and snacks which we will box and deliver to hospital workers who are struggling to make ends meet. We know these individuals are working long, hard hours in the hospitals and they don't have time or energy to wait in long lines at grocery stores on top of all their other responsibilities.
Any additional funds will be used to support the ongoing work of community organizations that provide hot meals to the houseless population throughout LA.

Healthcare Worker Services: We provide ongoing support for healthcare worker families through services such as in-person childcare, virtual tutoring, pet sitting, and grocery delivery.  Through partnerships with childcare experts at UCLA, we are creating pamphlets on child development to help support volunteers and parents who are now charged with the full time care and education of their children. We also provide CPR training to volunteers in order to ensure the safety of children who are cared for by our volunteers. Donations will be used to provide background checks for volunteers so that we might provide additional peace of mind to the healthcare worker families we strive to support.

Community Partnerships: In response to CDC recommendations for community members to wear cloth masks in public, we have created a new volunteer initiative to make hand-sewn masks to distribute to community organizations throughout Los Angeles. We are in need of help to purchase specific supplies for making these masks, such as elastics and filters. Donations will go directly to supplies needed to create and distribute masks to community organizations in need.

Communications Committee
: We seek to build volunteer recruitment programs, newsletters, and avenues for community members and students volunteers to get involved service work for the benefit of health care services workers.

Please help us do everything in our power to support our community and ensure the health and well-being of our healthcare workers so they can do their best to protect LA! We deeply appreciate your donation!
