Amelia's Leukemia Cause

Nothing can describe that deep sinking feeling when those haunting words are uttered… “your child has cancer”. As a devoted mother, nothing could have prepared me for the heart-wrenching moment I was told my 3 year old daughter had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. My world instantly came crashing down. As a strong, educated woman, I reasoned that we would get through this, just like many other hurdles that had been thrown my way over the years. But as the days progressed and I became increasing lethargic from lack of sleep and the increased physical demands of being carer to a sick child 24x7, I began to doubt that I was actually going to be able to cope. I began to cry daily. For someone who rarely felt this much despair, the daily stream of tears was an instant relief and for that split second I found the courage to continue. My life is now being lived minute to minute.

In 2010 my husband’s health started to deteriorate, at first we were led to believe that his genetic blood condition was manageable, however after two tumultuous years in and out of hospital and several near fatal incidents later, we were left wondering how we were going to cope. He has visited a number of specialists and there is still no clear diagnosis. With ongoing vital organ pain, lethargy and a range of other debilitating symptoms, 2015 was going to be the year for me to take over as the breadwinner and allow him the time to try and restore his health….. but this was not to be.

As a full-time carer for both my daughter and husband, life has become so challenging. Our personal savings have been swallowed up in medical costs and our lost earning ability. Our insurance company has failed make good on our income protection policy and after continues attempts to recover the money owed, we have lost hope that this will ever happen. Our 5 year old daughter  is also struggling to adjust to life – as her mother, I am simply not able to care for her the way I used to, I am unable to take her on outings or sit down and spend quality time with her. With increasing debt and failing health, our family feels like it is just falling apart.
