Andrea Needs a New Heart

Donation protected
Update: Andrea has taken a turn for the better! I'm happy to deliver some really great news! Andrea's cardiology team has reconsidered their recommendation for a heart transplant. She will be moving forward with a regimen of meds, therapy, and time. Spending 3 weeks in the cardiac ICU has been expensive and stressful. Andrea and Kurt have been so moved and filled with gratitude by your generosity during this intense time. As of right now we are suspending this campaign. Several people have asked that their donations stay in the account. I'm working with Gofundme to figure out how individuals can anonymously withdraw their donations if they choose to. I'll keep you posted! Thanks again for your kind words and generosity.

Warmly,
Carolyn

This is the story of Andrea Marsden's and Kurt Fritzler's life together. These two met in 1979 at the Veritable Quandry where Kurt was working behind the bar. Both were working in the food service industry. It was a whirlwind romance that settled into something wonderful and lasting. They married in 1981. Kurt and Andrea raised her daughters (Marci and Sara) together as she transitioned into a 30 year career at OHSU where she helped to support the development of the Family Practice Medicine department. There, she was a willing Den Mother to many "baby docs," as they began their own careers. Kurt, whose bartending career spanned 4 decades, created a 'home away from home' for many loyal customers and friends at Delphina's/Serratto Restaurant in NW Portland. Beloved family, two grandchildren (Simon and Nina), hobbies, and plans for retirement together filled their lives with satisfaction and a sense of purpose.

In early January 2017, quite literally on the eve of Kurt's retirment, Andrea was taken to the hospital with a possible virus that had done massive damage to her heart. Still young and healthy, Andrea passed all the qualifiying tests to be a candidate for a donor heart. Obviously not a decision to be made lightly, Kurt and Andrea talked at length together and with her medical team and decided that yes, they dearly want more years to watch their granchildren grow up and enjoy their retirement together. Kurt and Andrea are best friends.

The road ahead is long, uncertain, and expensive. They will likely need to travel to a different city for the transplant and will have ongoing housing and medical care expenses beyond what Medicare will provide for. We can't let their retirement savings be wiped out by this devastating event. I hope you'll join us in showing these two our love and support by making a donation to this campaign. Thank you!!
