Kigulu HIV/AIDs Orphans Fundraiser

Donación protegida
Over the last year I have had several opportunities to meet and get to know Lucy, a lovely young women who runs a school for children with HIV and orphans of people who have died from HIV/AIDs.

The Kigulu Orphan Centre is based in Kibera, which is the largest urban slum in Africa and home to up to one million people. It is also one of the largest slums in the world. The scale of the poverty and lack of services there is heartbreaking.

Lucy set up this school in conjunction with some of her family members in 2006. The school began with just 7 children, but now has 60 who are aged between 3 and 14 years old. She has previously received funds from an organization in the UK who helped her to buy the premises and build some classrooms. Unfortunately, the school now has no funding. Nothing at all. Lucy works with two volunteer teachers, none of them get paid anything, and they have to use their own money or ask for donations from the community in order to buy food for the children.

I thought that is where we could help.

It costs $250 (AUD) to feed 60 kids for one month, which is enough to buy basic food such as maize, beans, rice, maize flour and cooking oil. She can buy fresh vegetables on an ongoing basis, and also sometimes buys eggs or beef for the kids with HIV (they need a balanced diet), if there is enough money.

I would like to try to raise money to provide food for the children for the next 6 months. I will personally ensure that the money goes directly to the school and will provide updates on a blog and Facebook page that I am in the process of setting up, with the assistance of Lucy.

In addition to that, I also want to help Lucy to buy a sewing machine. She says that she can use that to sew the children’s school uniforms, and to make souvenirs that can be sold to tourists who come through Kibera. In doing something like this, she is able to have a sustainable form of income that will help to pay for food on an ongoing basis.

So, if you have some spare cash, please consider making a donation! There will be 60 happy children who will really appreciate your generosity!
