In November 2016, I ventured to Cambodia as a volunteer to be part of a team called Esther’s Voice. Esther’s Voice exists to prevent human trafficking and bring healing to women rescued from human trafficking by breaking cycles of brokenness and empowering women to bring change into their own lives and families through healthy decision-making. As part of this team, I was involved in using my music therapy skills to engage children and young people in playing the ukulele and sharing with them how they can be free of the effects of trauma.
On November 24th, 2017, I will be again flying to Cambodia as part of the Esther’s Voice Volunteer Team. This time, I will be staying for 16 days and have been asked to share music making strategies that will assist in the healing of trauma and grief and loss to social workers, counselors, and musicians. These strategies will assist the work they are already doing with young people who have experienced human trafficking, by providing another way of expressing the unspeakable traumas they have experienced. Last year I took 12 ukuleles to give away to 2 organisations. This year we are canvassing the many ukulele clubs in Sydney, to donate ukuleles they may have sitting around at home doing nothing so we can do them up and take them over to the children and young people I will be working with.
Having your support will mean I will have more resources to do up the donated ukuleles (e.g. buying strings) and it will also mean I will be able to ship more ukuleles to Cambodia via added luggage. As part of the team, there is a cost for accommodation, meals, and transport to and from various venues. Having your support will mean that my expenses to bring music therapy skills, ideas, and activities to people who live and work in Cambodia, will be largely covered. Having your assistance will make the possibility of lives being changed a reality.
