Khora Athens Refugee Centre Kitchen

THE AIM: to raise funds for urgently needed kitchen equipment at Khora Refugee Centre in Athens. At Khora, the many refugees currently located in the city can access a range of services, and socialise over a hot meal. It is the work of an extraordinary team of dedicated volunteers. You can find out more about Khora here: http://www.khora-athens.org/ . I am an occasional volunteer at Khora: when I was last there, in April, nearly 1,000 vegetarian lunches were served in one day – yet this is a kitchen with no dishwasher or working oven, and inadequate refrigeration. All prep work is done by hand, and everything is made from scratch. Volunteers struggle to keep up with demand! As well as providing breakfast and two rounds of lunches, wraps are made in late afternoon, for the education department.

 I found a supplier willing to offer catering equipment at trade price, so:

£,3,300 WILL BUY:
a deep-fat frier
a dishwasher
an oven
a mixer
a vegetable chopper
a refrigerator

When Khora has these things, it will mean:
-They will not have to throw away food that has gone bad because there is no room in the refrigerator;
-They will at last be able to serve baked goods (if you have experince of working in catering, or even a family kitchen, imagine managing without a oven...)
-Exhausted volunteers will be...less exhausted.
-Falafel! Need I say more!

This equipment is needed as soon as possible. As it is a relatively small amount, my aim is to raise the cash by JULY 1ST 2017. The picture shown is a recent one of Khora kitchen ( along with a number of lovely volunteers!) You can't see much, but there are: sinks, gas burners, work benches, a non-working oven, a too-small fridge. When everything is in place, I will share an updated picture, showing of everything in place. Please help in any way you can: donations, however small, will be most gratefully received, as will any shares on social media. You will be helping to feed families who have been forced to flee their own war-torn and unstable home countries, and are trying to start again.

THANK YOU!
