Keystone Hands and Feet: Julia Dye

Donation protected
I called Julia Dye late morning to see if I could meet the woman who had intrigued my husband’s heart with a solution to her problem. A soft voice on the other line answered, “Hello?” I explained to her who I was and what I was a part of and that I would love to meet her. She quickly responded, “Yes honey, you just woke me up.” After a few minutes back and forth I had a meeting scheduled with Ms. Dye for later that afternoon.

Accompanied by Mitzy Cevallos, we were sitting in Julia Dye’s living room of her Fort Lauderdale home. Ms. Dye explained that earlier that morning when I called, she had fallen back asleep after spending time with the Lord, as she does every morning.

Ms. Dye never really knew how it is we got placed in her life. My husband, Alan Monette, was at a court hearing for a client of Keystone Builder’s when an attorney was presenting his case about an 83 year old woman who was being fined by the city for her pool that had been popped out of the ground after Hurricane Irma. Alan Monette approached Tom Runyan, the attorney, to offer his services. After the team at Keystone Builders heard about Julia Dye’s situation, we agreed we all wanted to help her. We knew this wouldn’t be an easy or cheap task, but we were ready for the challenge.  Days later we had contacted plumbers, electricians and some were willing to help. Ms. Dye had tears in her eyes when she explained she’s been praying to God to send her help.

Originally from West Virginia, Julia Dye moved to Fort Lauderdale in the early 1960s. Julia Dye has been living in her home for over 50 years. She met her husband, Bob, at a Publix checkout line. As she was waiting in line, she let out a long sigh and the man standing behind her said “It can’t be all that bad!” They were married for over 21 years when Bob went home to be with his Father.

A long-time member of the Lighthouse Community Church in Dania Beach, Ms. Dye suffers from many health issues. She currently suffers from heart failure making it difficult to walk even with a walker. She has survived a heart attack, a stroke and a fall that caused her to break her hip about a year and a half ago. Her two sons, Doug and Phil, take care of Ms. Dye daily. They tend to her needs and drive her to doctor’s appointments. Ms. Dye explained she would have taken care of the pool; however, she lives paycheck to paycheck.

That afternoon with Ms. Dye was unforgettable. We laughed, we cried, and we ended in prayer. Helping Ms. Dye is an urgent situation as she risks losing her home over this issue; a home she has resided in for decades. We are coming together as a community to honor our promise to help Ms. Dye. We are looking for volunteers, donations and encouragement from our community. All check donations can be written to Recovery United Outreach Inc. and mailed to 180 E. Dania Beach Blvd., Unit 307 Dania Beach, FL 33004.  A GoFundMe has been started that will go towards this project and receipts will be provided upon request.  We have planned our Keystone Hands and Feet: Community Outreach day for Saturday, November 23rd at 8am. We will meet at 3105 SW 14th Street, Fort Lauderdale.
