Cervical-cancer-free Liberia

Tax deductible
I am Doyin Oluwole, the Chief Executive Officer of the Global Health Innovations & Action Foundation (GHIA-Foundation). I am a wife, mother and grandmother with 40 years of experience working in health for developing countries.

As I went round developing countries of sub-Saharan Africa and South America, I have met young women in their productive and reproductive age without access to adequate health care. One unforgettable example was a 34 year-old African woman who presented with advanced cervical cancer. Due to lack of access to funds, health care services and information, she died before help was available leaving behind four young children and an aged mother.

A woman dies in the developing world every two minutes from cervical cancer. In sub-Saharan Africa, cervical cancer is the number one cancer killer of young women and girls, and HIV-positive women are four to five times more likely to develop the disease than women who are HIV-negative. Cervical cancer now kills more women than maternal conditions globally.

Liberia’s health systems have been weakened by brutal and long civil conflict and the recent Ebola virus disease epidemic. In the rebuilding of the national health systems, it is imperative to prioritize women’s health including cervical cancer. Currently, Liberia does not have a national cervical cancer program. GHIA-Foundation plans to work with the Ministry of Health to establish that program within its comprehensive women’s health and HIV/AIDS program.

v  Your donation of $5.00 will:

-        buy a human papilloma virus (HPV) test kit for one woman; or

-        provide simple visual inspection with acetic acid (household vinegar)—VIA—to check the status of a woman’s cervix.

v  Your donation of $34.00 will provide VIA test and cryotherapy/treatment for a woman who has small precancerous lesion

v  Your donation of $50.00 will screen 10 women for cervical cancer; or test 10 women for human papilloma virus infection

v  Your donation of $4500.00 will procure a cryotherapy machine that will treat hundreds of women with small lesions and give hope that they will not develop cervical cancer

We will be most grateful if together we achieve a cervical-cancer free Liberia in one generation. All the girls and boys whose mothers are saved will thank you for the opportunity to attain their potential in life—because their mother was there—and because of your generosity.

Donate today, and before 2016 ends.
