Kevin McDermed's Medical Bills

Hi, my name is Cindy (McDermed) Rohwedder, Kevin's sister. Kevin, on July 31st, entered the Emergency Room with severe vomiting and other symptoms, which he thought would be an easy fix. Little did he know that those symptoms would land him in the hospital. He had many tests to determine what was causing the problem, including xrays, mri's, etc. Come to find out, he had scar tissue built up from previous surgery.

Five years ago, Kevin had emergency surgery to remove two ulcers that had burst in his stomach. Scar tissue had built up around the repaired stomach, causing discomfort and the bowels not to function properly. When the doctors found the problem, they admitted him to the hospital. Unfortunately, they did the standard Covid test when he was accepted and tested positive. The hospital informed my parents that they could not perform the necessary surgery until he tested negative, which meant at least a 10-day hospital stay in a Covid ward.

Kevin was then given a tube down his throat, which was super painful to try and empty the stomach contents. He was put on a feeding tube as doctors determined that his body had not been getting nutrients for many years, hence his weight loss. When he got to the ER, his body started to go into shut down mode due to the lack of nutrition his body was receiving. It was so bad that they had insulin beside the bed in case of kidney failure.

On August 10, he finally tested negative for Covid, and they performed the surgery. He had to have an endoscopy to determine if he could do a microscopic surgery. The results were that Kevin was far worse than they thought and needed to have more invasive surgery. They opened him up, took away part of the small intestine and stomach, and had to reattach them. Kevin is slated to be in the hospital for at least another week for monitoring. He is in a lot of pain.

Kevin is also very young, only 36. He has a very long road to recovery. Kevin has been put on short-term disability by his company. He is apprehensive about his incoming medical bills, including his hospital stay, his surgery, and all the testing that had to happen. In my opinion, it should be the last thing for him to worry about. I hope you will help chip in for the costly hospital bills he will have. He indeed thanks everyone from the bottom of his heart.
