Against all odds, we’ve had an amazing summer at The Cap. With live music, vibrant patios, the ever-growing record store and in-house brews, we’ve managed to make the best out of a scary situation! But let’s be honest, heading indoors for the winter will put a serious strain on our bottom line. At best, we can bring in 40-50% of last year's revenue (due to limited capacity and increased costs), and as patio season ends, we’re seeing that number drop significantly.
But the biggest barrier we face is trying to present live music in the Cap. If you’ve ever been to a show here, you know that it’s a special, sweaty lil' spot. To have shows indoors amid COVID-19, we need to completely revamp not just the space, but our entire approach to live events. This goes beyond adapting to public health guidelines; it’s about dreaming big for the longevity of our local music scene.
At the Cap, we pride ourselves on promoting live music in Fredericton, and we have every intention to #KEEPITLIVE, but we’re going to need your help!
WE ARE ASKING FOR YOUR SUPPORT IN RAISING $21,000 AS A ‘LIVE MUSIC RENOVATION FUND’ TO #KEEPITLIVE AT THE CAP.
Here are a few of the costs we need help with:
- Lexan. Lexan is a thin, glare-resistant glass that will allow patrons to have a [nearly] barrier-free live show experience. Estimated at $3600 + installation.
- Stage and aisle lighting. Our existing lighting system creates glare in even the thinnest sheets of Lexan. We need high-powered spotlights and adjustable floor and aisle lighting. Estimated at $2000.
- Behringer X32 soundboard. Our current soundboard takes up prime real estate in the Cap. With a smaller digital board, we can have more fans at each show! A new soundboard would also allow the Cap to keep up as live technology evolves (our current board is 20 years outdated), and integrate seamlessly with livestreams. Estimated at $3500.
- Microphones and stands. In pre-COVID times, artists would share microphones, amps, and everything else (sometimes it was a bit gross!). Now, we must sanitize every touch surface on stage between performances. Investing in more equipment will greatly ease sanitization processes. Estimated at $1000.
- Livestream equipment. To increase capacity and access for folks who are immuno-compromised, we will host high-quality, multi-camera streams of key events at the Cap. Estimated at $1200.
- Text-to-order tablets. To keep movement in the Cap limited, we’ll implement a text-to-order bar service. New-to-us tablets will allow our staff to receive orders and communicate with customers from a distance. Estimated at $1000.
There are a few other expenses - building equipment storage, sound traps, and paying sanitization staff - that will completely transform The Cap into a safe, reliable, and sustainable live music venue in 2020 and beyond.
