My mother, Kate Kline May, has a story to tell, and she would appreciate your support in funding the post-production editing.
In Alice Underground she brought her stunning black and white photography to the screen with a modern Alice on a captivating adventure through 1970s San Francisco. In her award wining documentary Shakespeare's Children, she told the behind the scenes stories of our Berkeley 4th-6th grade classmates who she taught and directed in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Her current project was nearly derailed when she suffered a stroke in 2017, a brain trauma identified as a "fatal aneurism." She is back to work and determined to complete this compelling project.
This story is an intimate study of the lives and historical context of my grandmother and her twin sister, first-generation Irish American women raised by a single mother during the Great Depression. They experienced alcoholism, bad relationships and many obstacles in their quest to escape poverty. It was a glamorous journey though, that included art, music and culture. The twins' story is documented in striking photographs and home video that would make an Instagram selfie queen envious.
