Karen Tang has been battling cancer for 10 years. She has undergone chemo and radiation treatments. With the help of her husband Mike and two sons she has made progress and fought to stay on the road to recovery and remission. Her form of cancer was a melanoma and it had metastasized and spread to several areas in her body.
One of the surgeries she needed was to remove a cancerous spot from her brain. Karen’s prognosis was good and she had been doing well for an extended period of time. In late summer of 2019 Karen experienced stroke like symptoms and could not move or talk. Karen was rushed to the emergency room. She required weeks of hospital care and a month in rehab and eventually was able to go home very near her normal self.
After being home for a short time she relapsed with essentially the same symptoms. She was back in the hospital and then transferred to the University of Minnesota Hospital system. She was hospitalized again for a period of time as she recovered and then went through another stint in rehab within the University of Minnesota system.
The doctors at the U of MN determined that the cause of Karen’s symptoms were seizures that were a result of scarring within her brain tissue from her previous surgery. Karen again was returned home and all felt life was returning to normal. She was herself again and our hopes were high.
Two days before Christmas the seizures returned and Karen was back at the University Hospitals and another stay in rehab. Karen is home again as of January 10th, 2020.
Karen worked at Cub Foods in Lakeville and some of her medical expenses were covered by her union insurance coverage. As she has been away from work since late summer her medical insurance coverage was ended on December 31, 2019.
Mike and Karen are facing some large medical bills including most necessary anti-seizure medication. Mike is working to investigate and apply for all possible medical assistance to help alleviate the financial strain on his family. Until all possible financial assistance can be explored and applied for we are asking for help to allow Mike and Karen to meet their financial needs
