Judy Lubnow Scholarship

For those of you that don’t know (even though I bring it up to every person I talk to) I am running the Baltimore Marathon on October 20th. The majority of the time, the reaction I get is “why?” That is a fair question since I never ran more than 3 miles before I signed up and may have had a few more meals at taco bell than a typical marathon runner probably should.

I was about 6-7 years old when my Mom ran the Marine Corps Marathon. I didn’t fully comprehend the accomplishment of completing the race at the time, but I do remember certain feelings I had being there in support. I remember her smiling after the race and the accomplished look on her face. I remember being proud that my mom finished the race and that made her “super cool” to her 7 year old son and still makes me feel that way at 24.

So to answer the “why?” question, I am running this marathon is to relive that memory of my mom and continue to create memories with my mom even if she is no longer here.

***Exclaimer*** I would be lying if I didn’t say due to her competitiveness that rubbed off on me, about 5% of the reason is because I want to beat her.

5 years ago In her Honor, George Mason High School and my family created a scholarship called "The Judy Lubnow Champion of Character Award." This scholarship is a four year scholarship for a student athlete or student supporter of George Mason High School athletics that focuses on the qualities of: Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship and Leadership and brings increased attention and commitment to the goal of our family and the George Mason Athletic Department to emphasize development and demonstration of character both on and off the field.
