Homeless Hoboken family with x3 dogs needs help!

Donation protected
Lifelong Hobokenites Juan and Marcella and their family are in a heartbreaking situation and need our help urgently!

They were evicted from their apartment in Uptown Hoboken on Adams Street on November 1st because of overdue rent, after living there for the last 17 years. Sadly Marcella lost her job during Covid and only went back 2 months ago. Juan is a cancer patient and does not work. (he's been through chemo, needs another surgery and another round of chemo, and has other medical issues to deal with like COPD, arthritis, etc.) Their oldest daughter works an entry level job, and they simply have not been able to make ends meet.

They've taken in 3 dogs over the years, all who had no other options themselves. The dogs love them, and they absolutely love their dogs. Now, they all find themselves homeless -literally sleeping on our streets.

The city has extended assistance to the people, but there's no situation that includes or allows the dogs. According to the city, they must surrender their dogs (to who is not even clear, as Liberty Humane is not accepting any owner surrenders, Secaucus is at capacity and St. Hubert's is also at capacity), but they're unwilling to surrender their animals. It's a hard no. Sadly, that's where the city/government assistance ends.

The family has (finally) agreed to let the dogs go into temporary foster homes until they can get back on their feet. This was not an easy decision for them to make at all, but we're relieved at the prospect of getting everyone inside soon!

@halfwayhomeanimalrescueteam has offered to work with them on their situation and help place the dogs in foster homes. The family will receive their dogs back once they're in pet-friendly housing and ready to welcome them home.

We urgently need to alleviate Juan and his family of the dogs by providing temporary fosters. We've received an INCREDIBLE offer from the owner of Camp Bow Wow in Hoboken to house all 3 dogs until the family is back on their feet, BUT they need to be spayed/neutered and UTD on vaccines. So, we need to find fosters for the dogs to get them through the surgery/recovery period until they can go to Camp Bow Wow.

We are taking the dogs for vaccines today, November 10th. (they are UTD on rabies through the city clinic, and they are all licensed too! The dogs are in good condition and well cared for and friendly!) When surgeries can be scheduled is unclear, but the sooner we have fosters lined up, the better. Also....these surgeries are expensive. The State does run a low cost program, but there's a long waitlist. We're have a lead on a local vet willing to work with us for a reduced cost, but it's still expensive. And x3!

Again, there’s a total of three dogs. Penny (small female bull mastiff mix, approx 7 years old), Hunter (small male beagle/boston terrier mix, approx 6 years old) and Nyla (small female retriever mix- approx 1 yr old).

They are dog friendly (meet and greet beforehand is required). They can be separated into three different homes for now or can all go into one together if someone is open to that. The GoFundMe will pay for vet expenses first and then any additional funds will be given to the family for living expenses once a they have dog-friendly housing lined up or in the works.

All fosters should be open to staying in contact with the owners (really just Juan).

The housing system will play out the way it works...and to be honest, I don't know how it works. What we have control over right now is getting the dogs into safe, loving, warm homes, getting them spayed/neutered so we can get them over to Camp Bow Wow to settle in while Juan and his family figure out their situation. We cannot make this happen without foster homes, so please, if you can offer temporary shelter for a dog(s) while we schedule their surgeries and see them through it, fill out the application at: https://www.hharteam.org/foster-form/
If you cannot foster, please donate!!

About me: You must be thinking - who is this person I'm giving my money to? How do I know she's legit? Honestly, I get it. I would be skeptical too. I live on the same block as the family and Juan has been the friendliest neighbor since we moved here in 2015. He says hello to EVERYONE in the neighborhood, knows everyone's kids and pets, he's cried with me when one of my dogs got sick and passed away, etc. They are just good people - and it broke my heart to learn about his situation. I've spent the last 5 days talking him into allowing temporary fosters and am elated we've gotten to this point. I've done their laundry, brought them food, purchased new clothing, gathered donations of warm coats (thank you to everyone who has donated) and am taking the dogs to the vet this afternoon. My husband and I both have demanding full time jobs, a young daughter and a senior dog. I was trying to get a councilperson to sponsor this GFM so it was more legitimate, but they were unwilling. So...here we are. There's another wonderful woman helping on the rescue side, in addition to the actual rescue organization (where you can donate to direct if you prefer) and I'll give her full access to the funds gathered and spent along the way. Any questions - please ask. Please donate! Please foster! Please share!!
