Why are we raising money for Chester Residents Concerned for Quality Living?

Everyone has the right to breathe clean air. Yet the injustice that Chester residents endure is the direct result of environmental racism. This fundraiser seeks to help change that. The money you donate will be put toward coordinating efforts to shut down the Covanta incinerator. It’s the largest part of the pollution problem in Chester.

For years the residents of Chester have suffered negative health effects because of the tons of trash the Covanta incinerator burns. The city’s rate of child hospitalization due to asthma is more than three times the state average. A quarter of the town's adults have asthma. Chester residents are more likely than other Delaware County residents to develop cancer or suffer from stroke and/or heart disease.

“It’s literally killing people,” says Zulene Mayfield, who chairs Chester Residents Concerned for Quality Living.

The incinerator is the largest in the country and burns 3500 tons of trash/day. But only 1.6 % of what the incinerator burns comes from the city itself. The rest is shipped by truck or train from up and down the East Coast. The most notable trash contributors are all of Delaware County. Thirty percent comes from Philadelphia.
