Journey to Stroke Recovery -- Kelly Glass

Beschermde donatie
On the evening of 13 July 2020,  our oldest son, Kelly Glass, was rushed to the Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, NC with symptoms indicating a stroke.   Upon arrival there, Kelly was alert, displayed limited movement of his right arm, not able to speak and in Atrial Fibrillation (AFIB) heart rhythm.

The medical staff at Onslow Memorial assessed Kelly and immediately airlifted him to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC.  NHRMC has a Stroke Center with staff that can better assess, treat and provide special care for stroke victims.  Immediately at NHRMC, it was determined that Kelly had an inclusion of the main artery running through the brain.  The surgeon performed a Thrombectomy, successfully locating, reducing and removing the clot.  Upon leaving recovery, Kelly still could not speak and in AFib.

On Friday, his cardiologist performed an Electrical Cardioversion to return to a normal sinus rhythm and a Transesophageal Echo (TEE) test to view the heart without the ribs or lungs getting in the way.  The cardioversion was not successful in putting Kelly’s heart back into a normal sinus rhythm and the TEE revealed a small leak in the atrial heart valve.

Kelly is being transferred from the Stroke Floor to the Cardiology floor for additional tests and treatment associated with Atrial Fibrillation.  The day, weeks and months of his long  journey to recovery has begun and he and his family will need and appreciate the encouragement, thoughts, prayers and moral encouragement from all family and friends who care so much.

For all of us that know Kelly, he is a very calm, low key kind of guy.  One of those perfect friends who always knows how to make someone laugh when they need it, and is always there if one ever needs help.  Kelly is a great dad and husband who will do anything to ensure that he and his family can enjoy life.  I feel lucky to call him my son.

The outpouring of texts, E-mail messages, social media postings and telephone calls are so heartwarming for the entire family.   Everyone is asking what they can do for Kelly and his family during this time.  Covid-19 restrictions and rules limit the visiting at NHRMC and Amy cannot stay with Kelly at the hospital so she is staying in a hotel in Wilmington in order to be close by him.  We are quite sure that medical insurance will not cover all of his medical expenses for his hospital stay and the anticipated lengthly physical therapy and speech rehabilitation sessions.

Our family has established this GoFundMe account to help offset unexpected medical expenses.    All funds received will go towards helping pay for expenses associated directly to Kelly’s treatment, recovery and rehabilitation.
