Jostelo, (known also as Chelo or JLo!) was called to be with the Lord and her beloved parents in heaven, Loreta Garces (1984) and Jocil Garces (2005) on May 22, 2020. She passed peacefully in the Sugarcube of Mt. Vernon, surrounded by her siblings and dearest friends, Jane, El Fano and Dollie. She was born in Brooklyn, NY and is survived by her siblings Christopher and Beverly, nephew Christian, nieces Giselle and Adelina and countless cousins, friends and loved ones.
Chelo was a super nerd- anything that she was interested in, she likely knew more depth and detail than the average person. She played classical piano, earned her Masters Degree in Public Health and so much more. But what truly defined her was her character. So to give you a true sense of how she lived and loved, we captured a few of the MANY stories that her dear friends and family have shared over the past few days- and the tremendous loss this is for all of us.

PS. And of course she passed on the birthday of one of her FAVORITE musician in the 90's- MORRISSEY!
Jane (Friend):
Her fight with cancer didn't define her, but it did spur her (somehow, a woman who already squeezed the last drop out of every day) to go out and see, hear, taste and feel it all, with a lot of courage and a big open heart. Hers was a life too short by at least half, but there's no doubt that her cruelly limited days were lived to the absolute fullest.
I'm still stunned, but I also feel both blessed and cheated, knowing I was lucky to shine in her light for nearly 30 years and devastated that it burned out far too soon.
El Fano (Friend):
Yesterday we lost one of our most nearest and dearest friend[ies] that anyone would be #blessed to have in their lives, their heart, and their homes—The one..The only...Miss "J-Lo" I will miss her so very much—her infectious laugh, her sparkling personality, her HUGE smile, her ever-giving heart, and her "never-give-up" attitude in facing her disease.
Dollie (Friend):
It didn't matter to her if I hadn't showered, dressed, brushed my teeth or the state of the mess that grows around me. She didn't care and loved me and all those she cared about as is. Celebrating each of us just as we are.
Youlla (Friend):
All day I've been thinking about my ho and remembering our time together from the good ole Binghamton days all the way up to us saying goodbye at the airport when we got back from our trip to Paisley Park. I can't even measure my love for Jostelo. I'm thankful to have met and become friends with this crazy ass chick.
Joy (Cousin):
I don’t know how to explain Jostelo to me other than: BIGGEST FAN. She was my biggest fan the moment I met her. Chelo never failed to go to any of my shows, travel to help me move into a dorm, go to the beach instead of school, or pay for some master classes for me. She supported me in my dreams when people didn’t and showed me theater, I never thought I’d see. She was my teacher, friend, and adventurer. There was never a dull moment whenever I was with her. And she was one of those cool adults that let me try her alcohol. I’m heartbroken that I’ve lost my biggest fan because she never knew I was hers. I admired her so much for her unapologetic attitude and her strong personality. There is truly no one like her in my life and I’m honored to know that was her.
Luzette (Cousin):
above all you were compassionate and loving. you always reached out to me, even when i thought no one would. you invited me to watch your favorite bands with you, bands that would eventually become my favorite, too. you never failed to remember every milestone i had - birthdays, graduations, marathons. you always showed up when i had an extra movie or concert ticket and needed someone to go with. you made me, a little weirdo girl, somehow feel less alone in this world.
