As some of you know, we have wanted to grow our family for some time now.
We have been actively trying for a second child for the past year and a half. After multiple tests, medicines, procedures, and specialists, it has been determined that because of Tiana's hormone issues after Thyroid cancer, getting pregnant again will be extremely difficult if not impossible.
We faced a choice: fertility treatments and IVF, or adoption. Since the beginning of our marriage, we have discussed the possibly of adoption. We have both seen in our own lives how acceptance and love has nothing to do with biology, and we wholeheartedly believe that adoption is an opportunity to love on a soul that is not fortunate enough to be born into their forever family. As such, we have decided to adopt a child from South Korea.
We decided on South Korea for a few different reasons, including Tiana’s heritage as well as the quality and transparency of the adoption system there. South Korea is a very progressive, well-developed country, but a cultural stigma against unwed mothers results in abandonment of children. The primary reason South Korea has a large orphan rate is because single, unwed mothers are publicly shamed and ostracized within society. Domestic adoption is quite rare, and when done is is usually completed in secrecy. In the last 60 years, only 4% of orphans were adopted domestically. Until South Korea changes culturally, these young mothers will continue to abandon their children. Tiana has a Korean student in class who recently moved to the States, and when discussing this issue he explained to her that single mothers are treated almost as criminals - they are so culturally shamed that it makes a difficult life for both mother and child. With both Tiana's heritage and the knowledge of Korean orphans, we really felt it is the best decision for our family.
In total, the adoption will cost over $40k. Some of this money goes to our agency in Colorado, but the majority goes to the Korean orphanage, foster home, and biological mother while carrying the baby. The process also requires both Tiana and Anthony to travel to South Korea twice, which is a significant expense.
We are hoping to raise $20k towards our adoption, and would appreciate any amount you can give to help.
