John & Charlotte Assisted Living

Donation protected
My brother John has lived since birth with cerebral palsy and now suffers from progressive Parkinson's disease.  His wife, Charlotte, has diabetes, congestive heart disease, and has great difficulty in walking due to a tumor on her spine.  She must use a walker to get around.  Because of their illnesses, they are no longer able to care for one another.   They live on social security and a small pension from John's working days as a custodian.  He was forced to retire at a young age due to effects of his cerebral palsy.  For many years, a few family members contributed funds to assist with their living conditions.  Those who have contributed can no longer afford to do so at such a high level.   It is obvious that John and Charlotte can no longer survive alone.  We therefore found an assisted living facility that is willing to accept them.  They moved in on October 8, 2018.  The process of selling their home and the move to the new facility was difficult and expensive.  Because of the poor condition of their furniture and personal items, we had no choice but to replace everything prior to the move.

We are applying for Medicaid, but that process can take several months before a decision is rendered.  In the meantime, they are required to pay the full amount for private care at the facility, which is $5,315 per month.  We anticipate that the proceeds from the sale of their house will be quickly depleted, leaving them with no savings and little income.  It will no longer cover private pay at the new facility.  It is our hope to cover the initial cost of their furnishings and perhaps 1 or 2 month's "rent" to take pressure off while the Medicaid application is being processed.

Any assistance provided is immensely appreciated and will go only for expenses and living arrangements for John and Charlotte.  The need for these funds is immediate because they are already in the facility and paying for private care.
