Help the Philippine People Affected by Typhoons

HEALTH CRISIS HAS NO BORDERS!

From Philippines and India to Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Jamaica and Zimbabwe, and now Bahamas there are healthcare crisis almost in every country in the world exacerbated by natural and man-made disasters.

NURSES, DOCTORS AND OTHER HEALTH WORKERS RESPOND—We come together and formed Fostering Aide thru Health Workers Alliance (FAHWA) started by Filipino American Health Workers Association. Part of this alliance is the New York Recovery Network (NYRN)..

We are volunteers who are members of New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) and other healthcare unions and non-union nurses including medical doctors, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, social workers and union organizers. We have over 600 nurses, doctors, respiratory therapists, social workers, physical therapists, pharmacists and other healthcare workers who have offered to volunteer their time and skills.

As of December 2018, our volunteers have served over 8,200 patients and their families providing free medical services and medicine in several remote areas in the Philippines, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Brazil, Dominican Republic and Mexico.

So far in 2019, FAHWA and the New York Recovery Network (NYRN) conducted 8 medical missions in many countries including India, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Jamaica and the Philippines. We had our first medical mission in 2019 in India hosted by the United Nurses Association (UNA) of India. In india, they have a caste system which divides Hindus into four main categories - Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and the Shudras. Outside of this Hindu caste system are the Dalits or the untouchables or "broken/scattered" - a group of human beings who have been depressed by subjecting them to “untouchability,” excluded from the four-fold varna system of Hinduism. Many of the Dalits in the caste system are the street sweepers and latrine cleaners. Per latest census, they comprise 16% of India's population (200 million people).

Twenty nurse volunteers, members of NYSNA/NYRN, provided free medical care to three Dalit villages in the surroundings of New Delhi during NYSNA's First 2019 Medical Mission. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vbr5Cfx7jQVSE6gBjOMYdFMHAUNaI-j4/view?usp=drivesdk
