Jimmy kicks COVID's butt
Spende geschützt
Our dear friend, and proud Phoenician, Jimmy Flores is battling the virus that has already claimed over 1.2k lives in Arizona alone. He's had it particularly rough, having developed a COVID-related pneumonia by the time he was admitted to the hospital. His medical team is preparing to start Jimmy on an experimental drug to treat the virus and his pneumonia may require surgical intervention. He's facing a hospital stay of at least a couple weeks and doctors and nurses working day and night to keep him breathing while attempting to treat the virus and its collateral damage.
The estimated cost of treating a patient with COVID-19 is about $34.5k, and that's assuming a six-day inpatient stay with little to no complications*. Jimmy's case is significantly more complicated and will require a longer stay, and we may still face new and unforeseen ramifications. We are still not sure what expenses will be covered by his insurance nor how federal COVID-response grants will be used to tend to the financial burden of the virus on American families and communities - as of yet, the only fully confirmed cost assistance is for testing (which is available for free in every state, regardless of insurance or lack thereof).
To honor Jimmy in line with his goals and dreams, his friends and family have decided that any excess funds from this gofundme will be invested into a development fund aimed first and foremost at helping Arizona communities recover economically from the virus. For some more background information on this, keep reading.
So many people know and love Jimmy for his unbreakable spirit and have been following his COVID-19 updates. Still, here's a rundown in case you need catching up or have yet to meet him:
On the virus:
Jimmy contracted the virus most likely on the night of June 6th, and began showing symptoms just two days later. He had a nasal swab test performed on the following Tuesday and received his positive test result Thursday of the same week, his health dwindling day by day. He immediately put himself into isolation to lower the risk of infecting his roommates (close friends) as much as possible. From that Thursday to Monday late morning, his friends attempted to care for Jimmy at home. Following all safety measures recommended by the CDC and more, they would deliver his meds, food, and water outside his door and remain alert 24/7. Despite these efforts, his health continued to deteriorate and the frustration of being alone in a room for days on end was eating at him.
On Sunday the 14th, the virus started working full speed against him. After being unable to speak or move for most of the day, and fearing for his life all night, he agreed to be taken to the ER the next day to seek professional attention. Doctors said he'd come at the perfect time - any longer and he would have at the very least been left impaired for life and at worst he could have died. That afternoon he was informed that he had developed a pneumonia before arriving to the hospital and that he would have to be transferred to a different hospital that specialized in infectious diseases to adequately treat him.
It's taken a combination of procedures to get and keep his vitals under control, breathing and coping techniques from professionals, and constant communication with his loved ones to keep him alive and breathing. He is now stabilized and expected to make a slow and steady, but sure (if not full) recovery. From his hospital bed, he's been updating his friends via facebook on his health and thoughts, in hopes of convincing reckless audiences to treat the virus seriously and heed CDC advise and warnings. He's received media attention from local news channels eager to spread awareness for the virus, and has continued to take work calls when he is able to.
On Jimmy:
His activity from the hospital bed is perfectly in character for Jimmy. If you know him, you know that he loves his city and that he works hard day in and day out to strengthen it. For the last two years, Jimmy has been working to increase Arizona urban and rural resilience through impact investment. With his co-founder and committed staff, interns, and advisors, he managed to build a tech and data-fueled development consultancy** from the ground up to help local entrepreneurs and investors use the Opportunity Zones tax incentive program to boost healthy development in Arizona communities.
In light of the public health crisis, Jimmy took action by bringing together collaborators from his startup to help small business owners nationwide to access the federal funds set aside for COVID relief. His idea was well received by the collaborators he chose to share with, and they brought in all the right PR, media, developers, banking industry leaders and other stakeholders/volunteers to bring it to fruition. Since then, the volunteer initiative blueacorn*** has successfully helped thousands of small business owners around the country to get forgivable loans from the Payment Protection Program.
Jimmy is nothing if not a man of integrity. All of his work is entirely in line with his values and with his goals. His biggest dream for some time now has been to create a community development fund, that is inclusive to small investors looking to invest in their own communities, cities, and state of Arizona. All of this is why we are choosing to kick this dream into action. It is our currently our biggest hope that Jimmy make a full recovery and that the hospital bill is significantly less than expected so that these funds may be applied to his fund. If this happens, you will be named an inaugural investor and great things will come of it.
Last but not least, we understand that many are dealing with troubled finances due to the virus and other ailments to our economy. Thank you from the heart and soul.
