Jessica’s Fight: Round One
Cancer, a word NO mother wants to ever use with her child’s name in the same sentence! However, the truth is my daughter Jessica has breast cancer. Life has changed suddenly in one month… What began as specs on a mammogram has become a cancer diagnosis with major surgery (double mastectomy) scheduled for June 3rd. Two days after her son Malachi graduates from high school, the very real battle against cancer will begin. It will be six years before Avery graduates. There is so much information that is still being processed by Jessica, her children and our whole family. The reality of what this means is still sinking in, “cancer shock” is real.
What we know is there will be at least three surgeries, weekly trips and treatments with possible radiation over the next nine months. Recovery will take time. What is most important now will be healing and providing for her children during this time when she will not be able to work. This is serious when you are a single mother. After a lot of reflection, the hard reality is that even with the help of family Jessica will need financial help to cover medical bills and living expenses. The medical bills have begun to arrive. Cancer is an expensive battle. Life and our children are precious beyond any cost! As a mother and a grandmother, it is my prayer that one year from now I will be able to share the good news that Jessica is cancer free. Until then, if you can help Jessica fight this fight our deepest gratitude will always be yours.
May God bless you!
Colleen AKA Mom/Grandma
In Jessica’s own words: On April 13 at 12:43 P.M., I received the news that most women fear. I have been diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma. I have breast cancer! It just still seems unreal as I write this. I think the hardest thing by far that I’ve ever had to do in my life was sitting down and explaining this to my two kids. But they are brave and amazing and give me strength every day to face whatever comes my way. They are my light, my hope, my love! My initial prognosis was very encouraging. My cancer was caught early, and the mammogram looked like it had not spread. However, that changed after my MRI results were reviewed. It has begun to spread. I am now facing a double mastectomy with the removal & biopsy of my lymph nodes. There will be many weekly follow up doctors’ visits & treatments. The hospital is two hours away. Being a single mother, this is a hard reality. I am without health insurance except for supplemental insurance that is very limited in its coverage.
It is a humbling position to be in when realizing you need help far beyond your means. I am grateful for the support, prayers and encouragement.
With love and gratitude, I thank you!
