Jerami Haws’ Recovery From Tragic Motorcycle Crash

Donation protected
Friends, family, and wider community—we reach out today with an urgent call for help. On August 25th, 2020, our dear friend, Jerami James Haws, suffered a tragic highway motorcycle accident, which resulted in the loss of his left leg and many other traumatic injuries.

He is currently in critical but stable condition at MetroHealth Medical Center.

His bike went down on the 176-S ramp to 480-E at 3:01 PM that Tuesday. The crash amputated his left leg at the knee, and he collided with the median. By the time paramedics arrived, he had lost ¾ of the blood in his body.

A witness pulled to the side of the highway, got out of her car, and immediately applied a tourniquet to suppress the bleeding—her decisive action played a crucial role in saving Jerami’s life. His commitment to wearing a full face helmet every single time he rides kept him alive long enough for her to take that life-saving measure.

We’re infinitely grateful for his decision to wear his helmet on that fateful day.

The following list illustrates the full scope of Jerami’s physical injuries:

—the amputation of his left leg above the knee

—severe road rash over his chest, left arm, and most of his left side body

—broken right femur

—broken left femur

—broken left hip socket

—broken right hip

—fractured pelvis

—broken right forearm

—broken right ankle

—twice broken left pointer finger

—gloved (peeled away) nails and skin on left pinkie and ring finger

—six clavicle fractures

—multiple fractures at his mid-spine

—multiple fractures at the top of his spine

—multiple fractures at the base of his spine

—wounds/road rash on multiple other locations on his body

His face and head are unharmed. Cognitively, he’s still the same wonderful human who got on his Dyna that sunny Tuesday afternoon, headed to a routine eye exam.

A highway motorcycle accident is always a serious and life-threatening emergency. But, when it results in the loss of a limb, the difficulties and costs faced by the victim and his family multiply exponentially. Jerami is a devoted father who supports his son in every way, including financially; the upcoming medical bills from this tragedy are estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands.

Today, we are asking for your help in supporting Jerami and his family through this enormously hard moment in time.

-We need help paying for Jerami’s emergency transportation to the hospital.

-We need help paying for his emergency surgeries, including multiple subsequent surgeries.

-We need your help paying for all of the x-rays which were required to evaluate his spinal fractures, his clavicle fractures, and all of the broken bones around his pelvis.

-We need help paying for the vital treatment he’s currently receiving in the hospital—the crucial dressing and redressing of his wounds, the pain medications, and every other service currently helping him to overcome the excruciating pain he is in.

-We need your help paying for his convalescence in the hospital during the next two or more months of in-patient therapy.

-And, finally, as Jerami comes home and continues along his long road of recovery, we will need your help bridging the gaps between the life he knew and the one he will know. A prosthetic will be required, as well as training on how to properly use it to live a full, happy life despite this traumatic event. He will also need continued physical, occupational, and psychological therapy.

This is a big ask; but, if not his family and friends—who else?
_____________

Jerami is unique. Anyone who’s ever met him would agree. At 6’7” tall and with a heart and sense of humor just as big as he is, Jerami really does seem “larger than life.” He enriches the lives of those who know him. He supports his friends and family at every available opportunity. We are all lucky to be a part of Jerami’s community.

And, this moment is our opportunity to be there for him like he has always been there for us. Now is our time to unite and help lift this worthy man up in his time of great need. Many hands make light work, including the helping hands of our faith-based communities, our motorcycle enthusiast communities, and the vastly expanded network of communities made possible only when we all work together for a common purpose.
