“Jamii – By supporting others we grow” is a social project brought to live by us: Issa, a Zanzibari boy and Laura, a German girl. This project has the purpose of setting up a small business on the African island Zanzibar and with the income generated from this we want to continuously support the poor village Mvuleni. Let us briefly explain the story behind this project and why it is so important to us and why it should be important to you too.
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania. The island is actually an archipelago in the Indian ocean made up of the islands Unguja and Pemba as well as several islets. It is the homeland for approximately 1.3 million people. The capital is Zanzibar city with its historic centre Stone Town on the main island Unguja. With its turquoise ocean, white beaches and green palm trees Zanzibar has a beautiful nature to offer which lures more and more tourists to the island. Most of these tourists will experience the island as a beautiful bathing paradise with always good-humoured inhabitants. But that is only part of the truth, there are only looking at one side of the story while being blind for the other one. Because as many other African countries poverty and starvation also affects the people living in Zanzibar. It is estimated that more than half of the population lives far below the poverty line, which is the reason for horrible child and infant death rates as well as a general low life expectancy (ca. 57 years). Moreover, it is estimated that 12% of all children of Zanzibar have acute malnutrition.
Now, Mvuleni is such a small village that it is not even listed on a map. But for general orientation, it is a village in the north of the island. Approximately 400 to 500 locals live in Mvuleni. The village is especially affected by poverty and starvation as it is so small and located off the busy places that it does not benefit at all from tourism. This remoteness has even more fatal consequences for the residents of Mvuleni as they have not enough food, no access to mineral water and the next school and hospital lies out of reach for many inhabitants.
This is the point where our project comes into action. We are both very concerned about the extreme poverty of the village which we saw and experienced with our own eyes and thus decided to do something about it. Because if we do not do something, who is? Issa is a simple local tour guide for tourists, and I am also just a normal German student, we are neither experts nor professionals. We are just two best friends who saw a problem wherefore we decided to use our minds, hands and hearts to build something that is bigger than us. We decided to set up a small business. The business is supposed to consist of renting scooters in Nungwi to tourists. Nungwi is a big village in the very north of the island where there are many tourists. Thus, it is not too far from Mvuleni and the perfect place for this kind of business. Nothing comparable is yet there but the demand is. With the income we generate from this we want to continuously support the village Mvuleni. The support is thought to consist first of basic supplies like food and water, but we also want to provide other stuff like pens, books, toothbrushes etc. for the children. When everything works out like we are dreaming of right now everything is possible in the future, and we can even imagine building a fountain or a school in the village. Important to us is the continuous support that does not stop after one fundraiser. Right now, we are in the very beginning and are standing in front of a big task for which we need your help! As we are both not people with much money, we need your help and support to be able to afford our first scooter to get the business started. “Jamii” is Swahili and means community which is what the project stands for. It should show that helping exceeds boundaries as well as borders and that we find meaning and purpose in helping others in need. We need to let others know that we are here, we need to remember each other that we are all part of a larger community. Only by supporting others we can grow. So now let’s grow together!

“Jamii- By supporting others we grow” (Indem wir andere unterstützen wachsen wir) ist ein soziales Projekt das von uns, Issa einem Zanzibari Jungen und Laura einem deutschen Mädchen, ins Leben gerufen wurde. Dieses Projekt hat den Zweck, ein kleines Unternehmen auf der afrikanischen Insel Sansibar zu gründen. Mit den daraus erzielten Einnahmen wollen wir das arme Dorf Mvuleni kontinuierlich unterstützen. Lasst uns kurz die Geschichte hinter diesem Projekt erklären und warum es für uns so wichtig ist und warum es auch für euch wichtig sein sollte.
Sansibar ist ein halbautonomer Teilstaat des Unionsstaates Tansania in Ostafrika. Die Insel ist eigentlich ein Archipel im Indischen Ozean, bestehend aus den Inseln Unguja und Pemba sowie mehreren Nebeninseln. Es ist die Heimat von rund 1,3 Millionen Menschen. Die Hauptstadt ist Sansibar-Stadt mit der Altstadt Stone Town auf der Hauptinsel Unguja. Mit seinem türkisfarbenen Meer, weißen Stränden und grünen Palmen bietet Sansibar eine wunderschöne Natur, die immer mehr Touristen auf die Insel lockt. Die meisten dieser Touristen werden die Insel als ein schönes Badeparadies mit immer gut gelaunten Einwohnern erleben. Aber das ist nur ein Teil der Wahrheit, diese Menschen betrachten nur eine Seite der Geschichte, während sie für die andere Seite blind bleiben. Denn wie in vielen anderen afrikanischen Ländern wirken sich Armut und Hunger auch auf die Menschen in Sansibar aus. Es wird geschätzt, dass mehr als die Hälfte der Bevölkerung weit unterhalb der Armutsgrenze lebt. Dies ist der Grund für schreckliche Kinder- und Säuglingssterblichkeitsraten sowie eine allgemein niedrige Lebenserwartung (ca. 57 Jahre). Es wird geschätzt, dass 12% aller Kinder in Sansibar unter akuter Unterernährung leiden.
Nun ist Mvuleni ein so kleines Dorf, dass es nicht einmal auf einer Karte steht. Aber zur allgemeinen Orientierung handelt es sich um ein Dorf im Norden der Insel. In Mvuleni leben etwa 400 bis 500 Einwohner. Das Dorf ist besonders von Armut und Hunger betroffen, da es so klein und abseits der geschäftigen Orte liegt, sodass es vom Tourismus überhaupt nicht profitiert. Diese Abgeschiedenheit hat für die Bewohner von Mvuleni noch fatalere Folgen, da sie nicht genug zu essen haben ebenso wenig wie einen Zugang zu Mineralwasser und die nächste Schule und das nächste Krankenhaus liegen für viele Einwohner außerhalb der Reichweite.
Genau an diesem Punkt kommt unser Projekt ins Spiel. Wir sind beide sehr besorgt über die extreme Armut des Dorfes, die wir mit eigenen Augen gesehen und erlebt haben und daher beschlossen wir etwas dagegen zu unternehmen. Denn wenn wir nichts tun, wer tut es dann? Issa ist ein einfacher Reiseführer für Touristen, und ich bin auch nur ein normaler deutscher Student, wir sind weder Experten noch Profis. Wir sind nur zwei beste Freunde, die ein Problem gesehen haben, weshalb wir beschlossen haben, unseren Verstand, unsere Hände und unser Herz einzusetzen, um etwas auf die Beine zu stellen, das so viel grösser und bedeutender ist als wir. Wir haben uns entschieden, ein kleines Unternehmen zu gründen. Das Geschäft soll aus dem Vermieten von Motorrollern an Touristen in Nungwi bestehen. Nungwi ist ein großes Dorf im Norden der Insel, in dem es viele Touristen gibt. Daher ist es nicht zu weit von Mvuleni entfernt und der perfekte Ort für diese Art von Geschäft. Bis jetzt gibt es nichts Vergleichbares, aber die Nachfrage besteht. Mit dem Einkommen, das wir daraus generieren, möchten wir das Dorf Mvuleni kontinuierlich unterstützen. Die Unterstützung soll in erster Linie aus Gaben wie Nahrung und Wasser bestehen, aber wir möchten auch andere Dinge wie Stifte, Bücher, Zahnbürsten usw. für die Kinder bereitstellen. Wenn alles so klappt, wie wir es uns vorstellen, ist in Zukunft jedoch alles möglich, und wir können uns sogar vorstellen, einen Brunnen oder eine Schule im Dorf zu bauen. Wichtig ist uns die kontinuierliche Unterstützung, die nicht nach einer Spendenaktion aufhört. Gerade jetzt stehen wir noch am Anfang einer großen Aufgabe, für die wir eure Hilfe brauchen! Da wir beide keine Menschen mit viel Geld sind, brauchen wir eure Unterstützung, um uns den ersten Roller für den Start unseres Unternehmens leisten zu können. "Jamii" ist Swahili und bedeutet Gemeinschaft, wofür das Projekt steht. Es soll zeigen, dass Helfen Grenzen und Landeslinien überschreitet und dass wir alle Sinn und Zweck darin finden, anderen in Not zu helfen. Wir müssen andere wissen lassen, dass wir hier sind. Wir müssen uns daran erinnern, dass wir alle Teil einer größeren Gemeinschaft sind. Nur wenn wir andere unterstützen, können wir wachsen. Also nun lasst uns gemeinsam wachsen!
