Jake's Garden at Sav's Restaurant

Donation protected
Jake Gibbs and Mamadou Savane had a bromance. They had similar quiet, generous spirits and shared the experience of owning restaurants. Jake loved Sav’s food and Sav appreciated Jake’s help on city business issues. Shortly after Jake passed away, Sav envisioned Jake’s Garden at the restaurant, a paradise on Main Street filled with Jake’s favorite plants—lilacs, forget-me-nots,  and native KY perennials and trees.

Turning a parking lot on Main Street into a lush garden is no easy task. Sav expected to break up the blacktop and find earth right beneath it. What he found instead was 8 inches of solid concrete on a bed of dry, hard, dense clay.  Major excavation and loads and loads of topsoil are needed to create the garden. Add COVID and unforeseen construction expenses and bringing the garden to fruition is more of a stretch than was first imagined.

You can help create this beautiful Lexington refuge by making a donation of any amount. The first 125 donors will receive a limited edition t-shirt designed by award-winning graphic designer, Miki Wright.  Donors' names will be listed on Sav’s Restaurant website. We’d also love donations of labor and if you’d like to contribute some of your garden perennials to Jake’s Garden, look for the list of plants included in the garden design that will be posted in the Spring.

Jake knew Lexington could be so much more than it is. He so wanted our city to be innovative, environmentally cherished and covered by beautiful green spaces. You can participate in making Jake's vision a reality by contributing to this one-of-a-kind neighborhood spot on Lexington's Main Street. And we hope you'll hang out at Jake's Garden at Sav's and enjoy great food, good conversation, and soul-stirring music.

Help Sav will make paradise, tear up a parking lot.

Details.  This fundraiser is organized by Anita Courtney, wife of the late Jake Gibbs. The money will be given to Mamadou Savane, owner of Savs Grill LLC,  to prepare the land, remove clay, add topsoil and gravel, buy trees, shrubs,  and other plant material, build a fire pit, add garden signage and cover necessary labor and transportation.
