Go Gaslight Grow

Back in 1980, while I was on my tour of duty in Okinawa for the United States Marine Corps, I was injured during a training exercise which put a halt to my plans of having a lifelong career in the military.
I was officially a disabled American Veteran, but I wanted to keep working. I’ve always enjoyed the restaurant business and had a dream of someday owning my own bar and restaurant. So after I got home and had some rehab time I went back to work as a bartender and server for Friday’s and then later at The Hard Rock Café in Indianapolis.
On my way into work each day I would drive by an old run down tavern that was closed at the time but had a for sale sign posted outside. I decided that this was my chance to fulfill my dream of owning my own place. So in 2008, and after talking it over with my wife, Laura, I bought The Gaslight Inn on little more than a maxed out credit card and a prayer.
Thanks to hard work and dedication of manager Raymond Scott Miller, who’s great culinary skills have garnered us rave reviews in such notable publications as The Chicago Tribune (Best Tenderloin Sandwich in Indianapolis) and Indianapolis Monthly (How To Eat Steak Without Busting Your Budget), The Gaslight Inn has come from being known as a broken down little dive bar on the South Side of Indy into a destination that serves the best food around and features live music and comedy acts.
It hasn’t been easy. For most of the past eight years Raymond and I have been working day in, day out, seven days a week and just recently decided to close the Gaslight on Mondays so that we could do more upkeep to improve the building and grounds. Anyone who has driven by our place knows that we desperately need new siding. We’d also like to upgrade the patio area by building some steps and adding an actual wooden deck in place of the gravel that’s there now. We also want to install one of those garage door type roll up windows in the wall that faces the patio area. And Raymond could sure use a new stove! The one that’s in the kitchen now we had to fix up by using some skills that I learned back when I was in the Marines.
But we can’t do it alone. We are asking our neighbors, families, and friends that we haven’t even met yet, to help us raise the money for the projects and equipment that we need to vastly improve The Gaslight Inn building and grounds so that we can take it to the same level of excellence that we put into our menu items.
Thank you for your consideration and time in reading this brief history of The Gaslight Inn. Please stop in and introduce yourself. I look forward to meeting each of you so that I can shake your hand and thank you personally.
  Sincerely,
  Joe DeMore
