IWGB Couriers & Logistics - Strike Hardship Fund

With various strikes planned in the coming months, members of the IWGB Couriers and Logistics Branch have voted to set up a Strike Hardship Fund in order to support our members that can least afford to take industrial action (The policy/motion we voted on can be found here).

The courier industry is notoriously exploitative, with the vast majority of companies dodging their responsibilities to provide basic rights such as holiday pay and guaranteed minimum wage by misclassifying workers as 'independent contractors'.

Collective action in the form of a strike is one of our greatest weapons in the fight for better pay and conditions. On 1st February 2019 we witnessed just how effective this can be as striking Deliveroo riders in Bristol and Nottingham were able to grind deliveries to a halt. Disruption works! Nottingham riders had a recent pay cut reversed as a result, and Bristol riders enjoyed extensive 'pay boosts' in the days following, as well as a recruitment freeze which was one of their demands.

Many of our members are on low, insecure pay, and the financial burden of taking time off work could sometimes be enough to stop someone from being able to go on strike. We can't stand the idea of a fellow courier wanting to take part in our actions but not being able to afford it, but by giving people the opportunity to apply to our Strike Hardship Fund we hope to stop this from happening.

We are a grassroots, member-led union, currently punching well above our weight by taking on rouge courier firms, multi-million pound companies, and tech giants like Deliveroo. Your donation will allow our most financially insecure members to take part in our actions and exercise their right to peaceful protest.
