Hi, my name is Kolby Shimojima, and I’m a senior at Oregon State University, studying Construction Engineering Management. As I prepare to graduate and step into the construction industry, I want to do more than just build projects — I want to help build a future where the people around me feel supported, valued, and safe.

That’s why I’m raising money for Lines for Life, a nonprofit focused on preventing substance abuse and suicide. This fundraiser specifically supports Construction Suicide Prevention.

The construction industry faces some of the highest suicide rates of any profession. Long hours, job pressure, and a stigma around mental health all contribute — and too often, people suffer in silence. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

To help bring awareness to this issue and raise funds for the cause, I’m taking on a difficult endurance challenge: an IRONMAN triathlon. That’s a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run — all in one day. It’s a physical and mental test, but it’s nothing compared to the battles so many face every day in silence.

UPDATE: I am proud to announce that I successfully completed the race and I can now call myself an Ironman! Although the race is over, I will still be looking for ways to promote this important cause and make sure construction workers receive the help they deserve.
