Our family is asking for support to help towards the funeral costs for both our mum and our grandmother, who passed away just one week apart.
Mum travelled to Cardiff to make arrangements for her own mother’s funeral. While she was here, she became seriously unwell with an infection on her heart. Sadly, her health declined rapidly, with further complications including blood clots, a stroke, and suspected lung cancer. Despite everyone’s efforts, she passed away shortly after.
More than 10 years ago mum was taken into hospital with Acute Cardiomyopathy and had underwent surgery to have a defibrillator fitted. The operation was a huge success and mum lived happily and healthy for many years. Four months ago mum then had to undergo another operation to replace the batteries of her defibrillator. Very shortly after the operation mum began to fall ill with flu like symptoms.
Prior to being hospitalised mum had spoken with and was seen by various medical professionals, she had been feeling unwell for some time, she was looking for answers, asking for help. Unfortunately this is has now been reported as an incident and there are many questions of whether more could have been done to help save our mum, was there not enough testing, was she misdiagnosed too early? These are questions that we are now fighting to find answers for, as well as trying to process everything that has happened.
Mum was full of life and positive in everything she did.
Alongside being a mother, Carla worked for Cardiff Council at different schools for a number of years and was cherished dearly by many colleagues and students of her workplaces.
She loved shopping and was happiest when she’d found a bargain, especially on Vinted or at a boot sale. In her spare time she spent hours creating beautiful diamond art pieces for friends and family, gifts that many of us will treasure forever. She absolutely adored her puppy Eric, and above all, she was a loving, caring, and devoted mum who always put her children first.
Just a week before losing Mum, we also lost our grandmother. She was an incredible woman who worked for the NHS her entire life, dedicating herself to caring for others. After many months in hospital, she sadly passed away, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and service.
We were not prepared for this emotionally or financially and it has been very upsetting to find that even after our grandmothers lifetime of work for the NHS, and our mothers long lived career for Cardiff Council there is little to no government funding or help available towards funeral costs.
We want to give both Mum and Nan the send off they deserve, celebrating their lives and everything they meant to us. Any contribution, no matter how much, would mean the world to our family during this incredibly challenging time. Any remaining donations will be split and donated between The British Heart Foundation and Age UK charities.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us during this difficult time it’s helping us more than you could imagine.
