Jonah Cervantes Garcia
Jonah Cervantes Garcia was born on October 11, 2020. He is the son of San Antonio Police Department Officer Denise Garcia and Registered Nurse Jason Cervantes. He is also the youngest of three boys. On August 8th of this year, Jonah was taken to the doctor since his eating habits had changed and he’d developed a slight fever. After countless moments of being told he had a virus, the flu, or had possibly even contracted Covid-19, Jonah’s mother had requested a further diagnosis. An x-ray was done, and it was reported that the liver was enlarged. The doctor requested a CT scan and extensive bloodwork be done on Friday, August 12th. The scan was performed in the early morning and by mid-afternoon, the doctor contacted Jonah’s parents advising them of the findings. A tumor measuring about 10cm large was present in Jonah’s liver. He was immediately admitted to the Children’s Hospital where he remained for approximately two weeks. While there, Jonah underwent countless procedures and routine tests to provide exact diagnosis. On August 24th, Jonah’s parents learned of his diagnosis, Childhood Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC). This is a rare type of malignant tumor that forms in the cells and tissues of the liver. While is it usually found in adults and adolescents, it has also been found in those younger than five years of age. This disease has a survival rate of less than 30% and there is not enough research available to aid in assisting those under 5 who have been affected by such. Jonah has had to receive Chemotherapy with hopes of shrinking the tumor located in the liver. The best option for survival is to remove the tumor or to have a liver transplant. Denise and Jason, along with doctors are hopeful that chemotherapy aids in the process to help Jonah. The plan is to have multiple rounds of chemo and surgery. If this route proves unsuccessful, then a liver transplant will be the only alternative at this time. There is a long road ahead for Jonah and his family. There are countless days of chemotherapy and medications that are needed to assist him in the process. Medical expenses have been adding up and unfortunately, there are some things that medical insurance does not cover. Any assistance at this time will greatly be appreciated. Let’s help our friends, two of San Antonio’s First Responders, SAPD Officer Garcia and RN Cervantes. They both do so much to aid in the community by serving and protecting and by assisting those in need of medical attention. All donations will be used to cover all medication expenses, medical procedures, etc. for Jonah. While our Lord only knows why some must have to go through such things, we know that they do not need to go through this alone. Let us offer our blessings, love and support to help the Garcia’s fight the fight for Jonah.
