David and Jackie welcomed baby Theodore into their family on August 23, 2018. After a healthy and comfortable pregnancy, they were shocked to hear Theo’s diagnosis of a rare heart malformation called Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (TAPVR). Theo was then rushed from Riverside to Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles for emergency open heart surgery, which took place 10 hours after Theo’s birth.
Many TAPVR patients lead a healthy and active life following their surgical repair and rarely require additional surgeries. However, the months following Theo’s first surgery were filled with multiple hospitalizations, two events where Theo stopped breathing and required mouth-to-mouth resuscitations, and a second open heart surgery to remove life-threatening scar tissue.
In January, they returned to CHLA for their third time. When doctors attempted to remove a pocket of air in Theo’s lungs, it caused his lungs to bleed. This injury caused Theo to experience temporary lung failure, nearly heart failure, and extended the amount of time he needs to recover in the hospital. Theo’s team of experts at CHLA are still trying to figure out what exactly made such a negative impact on his health this time.
Hundreds (possibly thousands!) of people around the world have committed to praying for Theo’s health since August. His family is immensely grateful for the prayers of so many. Some people have reached out, hoping to help in any way, in addition to praying. It was clear that raising funds for the Lytle family in this time was the desire of many, which has led to the creation of this Go Fund Me account and T-Shirt sale for them.
While the sum of hospital bills and pharmaceutical costs is still unknown, Dave and Jackie have had to take a considerable amount of time off work this year, and the need to be out of work and with Theo may only continue to multiply. Theo’s cardiologists, surgeon, and other specialists involved are not sure what the future holds for him.
He is a unique boy with a unique heart and, we pray, a unique story of healing. The road to recovery may still stretch out a long way ahead of him.
