Hurricane Relief for La Providencia
Donation protected
We are just beginning to understand the devastating impact hurricane Eta and Iota are having on Cooperative Coffees friends and producer partners in Central America. Lives have been lost and people have been displaced. Flooding and landslides have destroyed infrastructure and damaged coffee and other crops on the farm. It will take months to rebuild, all under the context of a COVID pandemic.
Rain has been incessant at La Providencia , located in Wiwilí de Jinotega, Nicaragua,. The Wiwilí river is at a level not seen before and the community of El Malecón is completely flooded. There are reports of least two deaths. Downed communication lines have made it difficult to reach members. Most damage reported has been caused by landslides resulting in lost coffee fields and parts of homes built in adobe being washed away. It is uncertain how much of the coffee harvest might be lost, however the bigger problem is the severely damaged roadways, which will prevent members from bringing their harvest to collection centers.
