HUGG is a self-help organisation. They provide a safe, confidential environment in which those bereaved by suicide can share their experiences and feelings, and thereby giving and gaining support from each other. The aftermath of a suicide is shocking, debilitating, surreal, life-changing. But you can learn to live with this loss. It is not easy, but HUGGS is here to help.
Each year in Ireland around 400 people (C.S.O. 2018) take their own life – each suicide has a devastating and lasting impact on their families, friends, and communities.
On January 4th 2016 Fiona Tuomey lost her 11-year-old daughter Milly to suicide. Amid the pain, shock, and grief, was a yearning to connect with others who had travelled the same road, people who had the same lived experience and who could provide proof of surviving the inestimable grief. Ultimately, she found one such group in the Midlands, and people there who gave her hope and a reason to carry-on. Over time Fiona realised that she was not alone and the lack of services nationwide was too important an issue to ignore. One year on, after extensive research, Fiona and a friend, who was also bereaved, established the first HUGG Suicide Peer Support Group in Dublin. This planted a seed which has since grown into HUGG, a charity with a mission to make a difference in the lives of those devastated by the loss of a loved one to suicide. HUGG was formally registered as a Charity and Company Limited by Guarantee at the end of 2018.
HUGG currently has 9 support groups around Ireland and virtually. Our aim is to provide one in every county in Ireland.
