Help Reunite Deported Mom with Daughter

Thirteen years.

That's how long our friend Tania Mendoza has been separated from her daughter Haylee.

Tania was deported to Mexico when Haylee was 5 years old. Haylee turns 18 in March and will finally be able to hug her mom.

Tania would like to celebrate their reunion by taking Haylee somewhere special in Mexico.

To help make this a joyful reunion, we are asking for $13 donations, as a reminder of the 13 years they have been kept apart.

Multiples of $13 are certainly welcome.

We met Tania last fall in Tijuana, where she is a full-time human rights activist and volunteers every Sunday at the Border Church, a binational, bilingual religious service.

Tania was brought by her parents to the U.S. from Mexico as a 3-year-old. She lived in southern California, graduated from high school and soon after became a mom.

In 2010, when Tania was 24, immigration officials learned that she was undocumented and deported her, forcing her to leave 5-year-old Haylee behind.

She settled in Tijuana and has been unable to see Haylee for 13 years except recently in video phone calls.

Haylee plans to go to Mexico to visit her mom soon, perhaps over spring break. She also will reunite with her grandparents, who were deported 11 years ago.

Trece años.

Ese es el tiempo que lleva separada nuestra amiga Tania Mendoza de su hija Haylee.

Tania fue deportada a México cuando Haylee tenía 5 años. Haylee cumple 18 años en marzo y finalmente podrá abrazar a su mamá.

A Tania le gustaría celebrar su reencuentro llevando a Haylee a algún lugar especial de México.
