Housing for Black Families in Atlanta

The holiday season is on its way, but for many families income insecurity and the threat of eviction will be all consuming concerns as we transition into winter. Our cooperative has been doing direct cash assistance and providing stipends to marginalized activists for 3 years, but with the added urgency of the pandemic and looming mass evictions we've decided we need to start additionally investing in longer term solutions like community properties! After successful historical fundraising efforts for properties by other core members this summer, we have decided to embark on our largest scale effort yet and tackle an Atlanta property initiative aimed at addressing issues our community faces through punitive family regulation practices. Two of our co-op’s vital leaders are cis gender Black women & parents. Jae and Jenna’s work together Advocates & Ogranizers began in Brooklyn, NY (2014). Their work shifted to the south, Atlanta, GA in 2017.

Our goal is to create a culturally sensitive and supportive, stigma free village of families working toward autonomous independence goals set by them for them, supported by the community in which they live in the Atlanta Metropolitan area.

We are NOT creating a traditional supportive housing model. We are simply providing free/affordable housing and access to resources.  From move in to move out each family has its own journey, defined by themselves. Through our Village’s professional affiliations we aim to  support  each family through their journey to independence.

$300,000 for Jenna and Jae to purchase a mixed use residential/commercial property in Atlanta, GA to supply stable joint housing, office space, and a childcare location so they can focus more fully on their community work.

$800,000 (without taking into account needed maintenance/utilities, taxes, and potential additional fees) for the purchase of a housing development or apartment complex located near public transportation for Black families in Atlanta.
This will allow Jenna & Jae to offer free/low cost, short or long term housing and crisis shelter to keep families off the street and together.
In addition to housing our initiative will provide wrap around resource linkage to services & care.
