Following a brave, yet private battle with stage IV cancer, Jan Lundsteen passed away peacefully at home on January 11th-- surrounded by family and with his wife Jean holding his hand. Upon first learning of his terminal diagnosis, he accepted the news with dignity and strength-- telling his family, "I've had a good life."
The good life to which Jan reflected upon centered on devotion to his family and volunteer service to the Boy Scouts of America.
As Jan's friends, fellow Scouters, and family, we are asking for your needed support in honoring Jan's legacy with a generous donation to help with the medical bills and palliative care expenses. In addition, any surplus contributions will help Jean during this period of mourning and adjustment.
To many of us, Jan will be respectfully remembered for his selfless, tireless, continuous service to the Boy Scouts of America over four decades, dating back to 1981 when he co-founded and served as the first Scoutmaster of Troop 46 in Lily Lake, IL. During those 40 years, Jan co-founded two other Scout Troops, including the first in Three Fires Council for special needs participants. Jan also established "Thunderbird"-- the predecessor to today's National Youth Leader Training-- and served on multiple WoodBadge / adult leader training staffs. In between his serving multiple council or district boards or committees, Jan was frequently first to raise his hand when facilities needed to be built or repaired.
Measured in hours dedicated to Scouting, Jan's lifetime contributions are all together remarkable and rare. Yet, the true, more significant measure of Jan's contributions is viewed through the positive impact he and his programs have had on, literally, thousands of Scouts and alumni who now range in age from 11 to 50+. He made an important difference in the lives of many and, in so doing, helped make our part of the world a better place.
To those closest and most important to Jan, he will be fondly remembered as brother, husband, Dad, and Papa. Jan was loved and cherished by his soulmate of over 50 years & partner in all things Scouting, Jean, his son Brad (Katy), daughters Natalie (Pat Byrne), Anna (Jeff) Tuohy, Cricket Quast, and grandchildren: Justin, Casey, Jacob, Jeanine, Katrina, Alex, Easton, Izzie, Trent, Ally, and Kirsten, along with great-grandson Brady and brother Niels.
To honor Jan's memory, the family is planning a memorial service to take place Sunday, May 29th, 2:00pm at Camp Big Timber.
Address: 37W955 Big Timber Rd, Elgin, IL 60124
Please continue to keep Jean and the Lundsteen family in your prayers.
Thank you very much for your contributions. Know that it is sincerely appreciated.
