Holiday Support for Children of UMWA 717 Members

Donation protected
Remington Arms, founded in 1816 in Ilion New York, is the oldest original manufacturer of shotguns and rifles in the United States. On Monday, October 26, 2020 the company terminated five hundred eighty-five (585) employees at the Ilion site, bringing a halt to production amid ongoing bankruptcy proceedings. The Remington workforce, comprised of second and third generation craftsmen and craftswomen, are members of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA #717).

Remington has refused to honor its collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with #717 and will not pay severance and accrued vacation benefits owed to workers. These families now face a multitude of hardships: unemployment, termination of heath care insurance on October 31, 2020, and an uncertain future with new company owners who indicate they will hire a significantly smaller workforce.

The winter months ahead will undoubtedly result in additional financial burdens for these workers as they navigate higher utility costs and holiday expenses. It is particularly difficult for families with young children, who experience both the joy and anticipation of Santa’s gift giving.

Please join the Central New York Labor Council, the James R. Cook Labor Agency, and the Workforce Development Institute in lessening the burden on #717 members this holiday season. Funding will be utilized to purchase toys, clothing, and gift cards. In keeping with COVID-19 restrictions, items will be issued through a gift-giving driveaway.
