In the San Martin Department of Peru the social problems which exist include a rate of poverty of 64% which has only become exacerbated by recent political upheaval and the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation puts many youth and young women at risk.
The need for this project has become evident as we have watched young ladies age out of the Aldea Infantil Virgen del Pilar (orphanage) where the Peruvian Outreach Project has been active for several years. We have witnessed the impact of high levels of poverty especially in the smaller villages away from the larger cities. Lack of financial resources for young ladies who wish to continue to study after they finish secondary school leaves them with few options at this point in life. Most end up with children they are ill able to support at a very young age. Many do not have the support of the father or their families which leads to a continued cycle of poverty.
The Hogar Hermelinda Project will establish a home for six carefully chosen young women who will experience a comfortable life and will be able to develop skills needed for their future . We will work with an established group of professionals who form our team in Tarapoto to open the Hogar Hermelinda.
Participants will have defined post-secondary educational goals. Accepted participants will be at least 18 years of age. They must be motivated to study and come from families with limited financial resources. Participants will also agree to contribute to the self-sustainability of the Hogar Hermelinda.
The Hogar Hermelinda will be supplied with interdisciplinary support to provide for the needs of its participants. They will be enrolled in programs of their choice in the city of Tarapoto. There will be a house mother to provide guidance and instruction to help these young ladies to be successful in this program. A psychologist will work with the young ladies to develop skills according to their needs. Skills that may be developed in this home include everything from self management (housekeeping, personal hygiene, emotional, mental and physical health) as well as the possibility of educational workshops on career options, rights awareness, and empowerment.
This is an ambitious project for us but with your assistance we can make Hogar Hermelinda a reality and a source of hope for many.
