On June 18th, 2019 at 2:51PM James Walter Beam was born at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach. Within 48 hours of his birth Julia and I were getting ready to bring him home. The staff at Hoag was finishing a final test before we were going to bring him home - unfortunately, he failed this test, which completely changed the course of our lives.
He was quickly moved up to the NICU at HOAG where they did an echocardiogram - they were worried that there was an issue with his heart. The cardiologist requested we transfer to CHOC so they could monitor him for a specific heart condition they were thinking was causing the problems - within hours we were prepped for transport and moved up to CHOC in an ambulance.
We spent a couple of days at CHOC and after the MRI our worst fears had been realized - James was born with a congenital heart defect. He was born with aortic coarctation, aortic stenosis, and a bicuspid aortic valve which was going to require open-heart surgery. The amazing team on CHOC suggested we be transported again, via helicopter, to CHLA to have the surgery in the next couple of days. Baby James was prepped and brought up to the roof and flown over within a couple of hours after finding out about his condition.
We had a few days to settle at CHLA before he was brought into surgery. On June 25th, when he was only 7 days old, he was rolled into the operating room for open-heart surgery to fix his heart conditions - this was the hardest moment of our lives. After 3 long hours of waiting the surgeon came out to tell us everything went perfectly.
After 2 weeks in the hospital, we found out that he had an infection at his incision site, which required a second surgery to clean out the site and resuture him. Everything went great with the second surgery, but we weren't expecting to see him off to the operating room again after things had been going so well. 22 long days and in the hospital, and we were finally able to bring our baby boy home.
For the last month there's been ups and downs, but baby James is doing great! We've had multiple appointments with our pediatrician and cardiologist and everything is working as it should be.
