Uplift Khayelitsha Through Community Center

Donation protected
SLE-Farming in cooperation with Moya We Khaya humbly presents this call for funding.

The Moya We Khaya farm is a community garden based in the township of Khayelitsha, Cape Town. The garden is a co-operative led by elderly women from different walks of life who came together for one common objective: the improvement of their community. The garden plants a variety of seasonal organic vegetables that are sold to local restaurants, community members, or through regularly held market days.

Moya We Khaya is more than just a farm. It’s more than just fresh organic vegetables. It’s dedicated, generous and community-oriented women who have worked their entire lives to better their community of Khayelitsha. They see the needs of their people, and work to provide solutions.

As the farm grew and more people from the community got involved in gardening, the need for a pack shed arose. A pack shed is a place where local farmers can properly clean and prepare their vegetables before selling them. However, the women stretched it further, birthing the idea of a community centre to benefit more of the community. They named it Hlumani, meaning “grow” in English, for a future of growth and prosperity. For this dream to become a reality, we need your help.

The centre will serve as a packing station and market for vegetables on the one hand, and as a cultural meeting place for Khayelitsha on the other. Other basic needs such as bathrooms and storage are also met.

Every part of Hlumani has been crafted with sustainability and community in mind, from the use of solar power and rainwater, to the multi-purpose rooms where the community can meet. Furthermore, it strengthens links between local farmers and vendors, creating a viable market for further growth. Therein, other persistent issues such as youth unemployment are alleviated.

Hlumani will be a place to gather for everyone. To eat, to speak, to connect.

Help us grow! Make Hlumani a reality.
