The Massachusetts Coalition of Domestic Workers (MCDW) works to bring racial, social and economic justice and dignity to all domestic workers in our state. MCDW was founded in 2010 and was the driving force in passing the MA Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights (BoR) in April 2014. The BoR established important labor standards and granted basic protections to nannies, housekeepers, and other in-home caregivers. The passage of the Domestic Workers BoR is the Coalition’s proudest accomplishment thus far.
Today, MCDW is accountable to the Brazilian Women’s Group (BWG), the Brazilian Workers Center (BWC), the Dominican Development Center (DDC), Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health (MASSCosh) and Women’s Institute for Leadership Development (WiLD). The Coalition is led by the Steering Committee members and 2 part-time staff members. Greater Boston Legal Services (GBLS) serves as our legal counsel and reports cases on our behalf to the Attorney General Office. The New England Jewish Labor Committee and Greater Boston Independent Living are our partners in organizing domestic workers’ employers.
There are 68,000 domestic workers in Massachusetts and we are asking that you donate for a scholarship that will enable us to outreach to workers who do not know about their rights. Domestic work is dignified work and therefore should be protected.
This fundraiser is asking for your help to support us in facilitating a more informed democracy. In addition to the worker outreach, the funds will go to supporting our communications infrastructure. Our communication to our members and supporters is crucial in this age of fake news and disinformation. It is critical that we communicate the truth of the moment to our movement and to the broader community.
