The HERE4LIFE concert is a community-based prevention initiative that has developed in response to the dramatic increase in the rate of youth suicide that was observed in North Queensland from 2014 – currently. Addressing suicide in Townsville is a challenging task. The scale and breadth of factors that are associated with suicide and attempted suicide - and the complex interplay of these factors- underscores the magnitude of the challenge associated with suicide prevention.
The key aims of the HERE4LIFE event are:
- to promote mental health and suicide awareness.
raise awareness and help reduce stigma
- increase community understanding and acceptance of people with a mental illness as individuals with a range of skills, interests and characteristics – just like any other member of the community -harness capacities and provide opportunities.
- promote social inclusion has positive implications for the health and welfare of communities.
- Increasing the awareness of social inclusion approach as a framework for tackling mental illness and disadvantage with subsequent potential to prevent suicide
Here4Life will bring together existing community networks from all sector of the community through highlight the issues of suicide and promote the importance of the awareness, information and skills to be able to address this issues. This event will be the platform to build resilience through the provision of education and, build the capacity of community to recognise and respond appropriately to people at risk of suicide; connecting to community, identifying and promoting strategies that facilitate opportunities for people to connect with their local community; service gaps and access issues, to build capacity of community to address service gaps and improve access to existing services; and referral, networks and help seeking, to build community capacity for help seeking by increasing awareness and knowledge of referral pathways and support services. As a result of community concern, commitment and strong partnerships the Here4Life has had great success in building resilience in the effort to promote the awareness of suicide in the community
HERE4LIFE is a FREE Community Concert that will bring some of Australia's premier performing artists to Townsville to share the message of suicide prevention. Stan Walker, Dami Im & Rochelle Pitt are some of the artists who will be performing.
HERE4LIFE will bring a range of key service agencies together at the event to promote engagement. Agencies including the Townsville Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Service (TAIHS) our major sponsor, Mental Illness Fellowship NQ, Queensland Youth Services, The Salvation Army and many others.
