Help Support Derrick After a Life-Changing Injury

On September 10th, 18-year-old Derrick’s life changed in an instant. As a college freshman, what started as a normal day at football practice turned into a tragedy when his knee was severely impacted while hyperextended.

After being rushed to the emergency room, doctors discovered devastating injuries: Derrick had severed the main artery supplying blood to his leg and foot, torn both his ACL and PCL, damaged his fibula and tibia, and completely torn his calf muscle away from his leg. The lack of blood flow left him without feeling in his foot for an extended period of time, causing the muscle and tissue to die and leading to a dangerous infection.

In just two weeks, Derrick endured seven surgeries as doctors fought tirelessly to save his leg. Sadly, during the eighth surgery, he had to undergo an above-the-knee amputation.

Derrick is a strong and determined young man whose positive spirit continues to inspire those around him. But this life-changing event has brought overwhelming challenges. He comes from a single-parent household, and the unexpected medical costs, rehabilitation expenses, prosthetics, and ongoing care needs have placed a heavy financial burden on his family.
