Helping Wollondilly Farmers

Susan and James are local farmers in Wollondilly shire. They have been raising cattle for over 30 years, coming from generations of farmers.
They started with very small herds and over time have built their herd to 1000 head of cattle with intricate breeding patterns that produce beef for the Australian and export market. They currently face losing the whole herd which would have a major impact on the supply and pricing in the beef market.
Over the years they have endured many droughts, floods and countless hurdles the harsh reality of farm life has thrown at them. Never have they endured a drought so severe as the one that is gripping our NSW farmers right now and the sad reality is … it’s about to get worse. The current forecast of rain is not enough to fill dams or promote growth of vegetation, and summer is fast approaching with predictions of record temperatures.
Without urgent relief, the future of the farm is looking very grim.
Keeping the herd alive is a $20,000 a week expense with no money coming in from live stock sales. The hard-earned savings are long gone, and they are faced with the heartbreaking fact that within months they will not be able to feed their herd and the cattle will surely die.
There are thousands of farmers around the country in dire need in the same way if not worse. James and Susan are very appreciative of the support they’ve been provided to date: The Dilly Drought Drive have supplied several loads of hay over the past six months, and Rapid Relief were kind enough to share with them one load of hay. However, with the high demand of Drought Relief they remain in dire need of support.
It was with great reluctance but an overwhelming feeling of relief that Susan and her family accepted the offer of help from locals who are interested in helping farmers keep their animals alive.
Without help, the effects of the drought will flow into our homes and lives as produce declines and prices in the supermarkets rise. Susan and James provide produce to many local butchers who will surely feel the effect as their livestock slowly decline without the means to feed them.
Right now, these farmers who are our neighbours, friends, and integral parts of the community we love so much are suffering and every little contribution helps. It is with our small actions, together, that we can make great change and provide the help that is so sorely needed.
